Cameco Wins Third Consecutive National Mining Safety Award
Cameco’s (TSX: CCO; NYSE: CCJ) McArthur River mine has been awarded the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum’s prestigious John T. Ryan National Safety Trophy for the third consecutive year.
The award, which recognizes the best safety performance in the metal mine category in 2015, was presented to Cameco officials at the CIM convention in Vancouver on Monday, May 2.
In 2015, McArthur River employees (including contractors) worked a total of 1.86 million hours without a lost-time injury (LTI). This year’s award marks the third consecutive year McArthur River has been recognized with the John T. Ryan safety trophy and the fifth time the mine has been honoured with the national award. Past years were in 2000, 2009, 2013 and 2014.
“Our people at McArthur River have consistently achieved outstanding safety results during a time when the mine has been responsible for producing almost half of the company’s total annual uranium production,” said Tim Gitzel, Cameco’s president and CEO. “This third consecutive John T. Ryan award shows that exceptional safety performance and excellent mine performance can go hand in hand. Our employees and contractors have embraced our strong safety culture and have been recognized for their effort.”
Across the company, Cameco delivered strong safety performance in 2015. Five Cameco operating sites had no lost-time injuries and two extended their LTI-free performance to multiple years. This includes the Blind River refinery (nine years) and Crow Butte (nine years).
